Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee won the Palmetto Family Council Straw Poll Thursday night, September 20 2007
held in Columbia,South Carolina.

He and Duncan Hunter,Daniel Gilbert and Hugh Cort were among the candidates actually appearing in flesh to meet, greet and speak to the crowd.

The three-hour event at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center saw close to 600 people attend.
The area around the center, located in Columbia's downtown, was covered with signs for Paul and Romney.

Ron Paul clearly had the most vocal support group on hand, however.

Huckabee got 206 of the 539 votes cast. He edged U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, who got 179 votes.Former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., had 43 votes to finish third. He was followed by U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., with 29; U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif, with 25; former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney with 14; North Carolina businessman Daniel Gilbert had 12; U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., with 10; Hugh Cort, an Alabama doctor, with seven, and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani with five.

Guiliani was notably not in attendance, and did not even bother to have any presence at all in Columbia S.C.

He was booed when mentioned by name.

Guiliani's campaign said he skips events linked to straw polls.

Several Republican presidential candidates, including Ron Paul,John McCain and Fred Thompson spoke to the Palmetto Family Council's stump and straw poll crowd by telephone or video.
Mitt Romney spoke via video,
saying he was out raising money.

The Palmetto Family Council has been one of the most politically influential groups in South Carolina in the last few years and is considered a strong indication of what the conservative right is thinking in the state.

  • The funny thing is, Ron Paul is actually a true Christian. He is the only candidate that really truly asks himself "What Would Jesus Do?" and then he does that.

As far as I can tell Huckabee is a pretend Christian that only tells us what we want to hear. Would Jesus be FOR killing people in Iraq? No. Jesus would say turn the other cheek and leave them alone. Which is exactly what Ron Paul says.

  • Ron Paul...no hope! LoSER! YOU LOST RON PAUL!

  • Don't trust the polls.

    Don't trust the media.

    Ron Paul: Hope for America

  • he should have won south carolina, i will not vote for macain he will have us in war for another 100yrs he said

  • fuck thompson

  • Huckabee is going to take South Carolina on Saturday and Ron Paul will get less than 5% of the vote.

  • This is typical reporting on the subject. Huckabee is the winner, while Paul has blah blah votes whatever and Thompson coming in third place. Shouldnt she say that Huckabee barely took the lead, and that a hell of a feat for Paul considering his disadvantage in the media arena, Whatever... I'd like to think that good will prevail.. and the truth will be realized.

  • Thompson is raking in donations. Please add YOURS to it, today! FRED08(dot)com

Huckabee is dangerous and would destroy the Republican party as we've known it to be....

  • Not a bad idea. We all have a common enemy of the people. You guys over in England have your Royal Institute of International Affairs (RIIA) and we have our American branch called the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). Even Canada has the Canadian Institute of International affairs (CIIA). In Asia it's the Institute of Pacific Relations. We need to have a global resistance to globalism. lol

  • we should start a website, americans and europeans for ron paul
