Heart of Stone was Recorded 21--23 July 1964 with Jimmy Page on guitar and Clem Cattini on drums. This was one of Jimmy Pages first studio recoding and releases and it was way before Led Zeppelin and the Yardbirds. This is off Metamorphosis. Metamorphosis is the third compilation album of The Rolling Stones music released by former manager Allen Klein's ABKCO Records (who usurped control of the band's Decca/London material in 1970) after the band's departure from Decca and Klein. Released in 1975, Metamorphosis centers on outtakes and alternate versions of well-known songs recorded from 1964 to 1970.
That's not Page on the pedal steel -- the pedal steel part was added in the '70s. There are bootleg versions that don't have the pedal steel part.

I like this version better. I dig that extra verse! ''...Ya all end up just the same.''

@gangtwanger No one but those who were actually there really knows for sure if Page was also playing the pedal steel part. But it's very possible. He soon played steel guitar proficiently on Zep's first LP (Your Time Is Gonna Come) and elsewhere (That's The Way)
