@wijse Maybe you didn't understand my story. The wolf had to retreat, not the borzois. The borzois' prey drive was very much alive. Mine certainly were fierce hunters. They were descended from show dogs and some working Wyoming ranch coyote killers. They did exactly what they were bred to do, to be my best friends and hunt. And they were stunning looking! I just didn't expect them to bring down large game in my fenced yard, in town! That was an unpleasant surprise.

@londerosa Actually you can blame show people that the qualities of the long haired borzoi as a hunting dog has been diminished, because of poor breeding. The short haired borzoi is the one who still holds true to its roots, as a companion and hunting dog.

@wijse Yep, they never had the opportunity to meet a wolf, but I know what they would have done if they had. My Russian Mafia! I read about a guy with a very tame wolf. He made up some innocuous sounding breed name for it and took it into a benched dog show. They wandered around without incident until they came to the borzois, who knew with every fiber of their beings that that was a wolf. The zois went wild, straining at their tethers and growling. They beat a speedy retreat.

My Dane ripped up my new sod lawn this morning. Too bad I didn't have a foam deer out there to distract him. I used to have seven borzois and once came home to bloody footprints in my house. I checked everyone out for injuries, but they were fine, so I thought that they had killed yet another cat. I went out in my fenced yard looking for the poor cat and found instead a DEER! They had brought down a deer, chewed on it, but not killed it. When it quit running, it was no more fun. Borzois!
