We have these nasty critters at our house. They kills trees and climb on to them and make spiky cocoons. anyone know how to get rid of them?

we tried the less harsh route of using an oil, we sprayed in late winter and again in spring. It didn't seem to make much of a difference, but they were pretty bad. We finally got Sevin spray and all are dead now. I think we got them in time to save the trees, I hope anyway. They did a significant amount of damage in a very short peroid of time.
