Using truncheons, shields, and water cannon, police violently disperse protesters seeking to "occupy" Mendiola Bridge near the presidential palace in Manila, Philippines. Led by students, workers, and other impoverished sectors, the protest aimed to highlight the intensifying economic crisis among the poor due to neoliberal policies being pushed by the Aquino administration and its predecessors. The students, teachers, health workers, government employees, overseas Filipinos, among many others, protest the budget cuts in education and other social services in the 2012 national budget. Workers, meanwhile, seek to highlight the terrible conditions in their workplaces, as well as their paltry minimum pay.
