Obesity Rate for New York City Children Plummets, Study Says

Obesity rates for New York City children in kindergarten through eighth grade dropped significantly in the past five years, a new report says.

According to the study conducted by Magdalena Berger and other researchers, the obesity rate among New York City children decreased by 5.5 percent between 2006 and 2010. If this isn't enough good news, the report also noted that among major American cities, New York City posted the largest decline in obesity among this demographic. The authors also broke down and categorized many of their findings, allowing for the observance of trends within ethnic groups and economic levels. The biggest decrease in obesity levels came among those between the ages of 5 and 6. Among ethnic groups, whites experienced the largest drop.

Concern about an "obesity epidemic" several years ago sparked the inception of several public programs to help New York's youngest slim down. In schools, cafeterias were barred from serving deep-fried foods and sodas. Instead, salad bars and healthier drinks were made available. The sale of sweets and fatty foods for school fundraisers was also curbed. Teachers have also been encouraged to make exercising an important part of the school day.

As schools face the end of a tough year -- budget cuts have hit New York City's system hard -- the report comes as a welcome source of good news. Let's hope it stays that way.
