A 49-year-old Maryland man suffering from end-stage emphysema is believed to be the first person in the United States to be liberated from both a ventilator and traditional, cumbersome lung machine while waiting to receive a lung transplant.
Bartley P. Griffith, M.D., professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and chief of cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center, has been at the forefront of developing a small, portable artificial lung to help patients with severe lung disease.

SAY NO TO SMOKING!!! Can I specify on my donor card "do not give my lungs to an ex smoker" . Ok seriously I know how recipients get on the list. But this is just so preventable in many cases.
