ANCHOR:
Japans annual defense report cautions Japan to be vigilant of the Chinese Communist Partys growing military power. At an annual military air show near Tokyo, Prime Minister Taro Aso spoke about the report and the nations growing uncertainty of its neighbors in the region.
STORY:
The annual defense report raised some caution over Russia's military activities around Japan and the threat of a nuclear missile from North Korea.
[Taro Aso, Japanese Prime Minister]:
"It is absolutely vital that we secure our own safety to maintain the peace, preserve our independence and ensure our nation's development and prosperity."
Japan is in the midst of coming up with a new defense policy. It addresses the rapidly changing security situation in the country. The new policy more clearly outlines the need for Japan to develop its defense capability amid the Chinese Communist Party's military build-up, as well as Russia's border activities and North Korea's continuing nuclear saga.
For the Japanese public, North Korea is indeed the biggest security threat in the region.
[Yuji Watanabe, Public Servant]:
"We have security issues to be concerned about these days, including North Korea. We've got to get our act together."
[Yasuko Takahashi, Housewife]:
"I think we've got to defend ourselves otherwise we'll be invaded and it won't be good for the people of this nation."
The plan is reviewed every five years. It was last revised back in 1995 and 2004, to reflect changes in international military powers.
