@Jowav Sorry for the late reply, but if you're talking about Special Techniques, simply use different abilities and you'll learn new techniques. Look up GameFAQs for guides on what skill requires what abilities if you're interested in learning them all/the stronger ones.
Spells are entirely different and depend on the instrument, material, and coin you used.

how did u learn song of the spirit.... what is placed in the special and what in the action slots...?

Abillities: Spin,Evade,Taunt
Even though there are only 2 Ability slots, you can alternate between abilities (preferably use 2, then switch out 1 after a few battles). What you equip as Special Techniques or Magic doesn't matter.
