In honor of Saint Damien, (canonized in 2009) the Leeward Community College Kanikapila Singers, under the direction of Marilyn Liu Kim, made the journey to Kalaupapa, Molokai to perform Prayers From Kalaupapa on Friday, May 27, 2011. This four part a cappella choral work was written specifically for a possible performance in Kalaupapa.

The Kanikapila Singers retraced Saint Damien's steps on their 3.2 mile hike down to Kalaupapa (and hike up). Also accompanying them on this once in a lifetime journey was the composer of the piece, Matt Glickstein. Born and raised on O'ahu, Matt is currently pursuing a career in songwriting while living on the island of Lanai with his wife, Kerri.

Prayers From Kalaupapa illustrates the pain and suffering of the patients on Molokai with the voices of the choir, and Damien's love and compassion in a solo baritone line. The piece debuted in November of 2009 on the grounds of 'Iolani Palace, and has since been performed by each major University choir on O'ahu.
