Take a look at whether one ligature can make your saxophone sound any different to the way it does with another.

  • Well, that was somewhat useful, but I had hoped that you were going to take it a LOT further. Like comparing traditional ligs vs. Rovner-style vs. a ring ligature, with sound samples from the same blindfolded player, playing various different tones & styles.

  • @ToddCWilliams

Yes, I may well do that in a sequel when I have time.

  • that 1st reed must be the most perfect reed on the most perfect lay I've ever seen

  • The reed doens't just vibrates from right to left.

A Ligature determens how a reed can vibrate. Hence of course it has influences on the attack, the altissimo and the sound.

The audience doen't hear it. They also don't hear if some one plays a Mk VI or a vintage Otto Link and they don't hear the years of work we put in our sound. The just hear the final product.

If a ligature just changes 0,5% of the sound, that's someting I notice. I work everyday for sounding great. So 0,5% matter for me

  • whats the name of that song?

  • Different ligatures.. In most cases.. listeners can't recognize difference but(!) PLAYER knows and feels.. touging.. Articulations and subtle response changes on wide range of notes.

  • Different materials and various way to hold down... Ligatures DO make a difference. So you think sound heard by audience is the only important thing???

  • ligatures do make a difference. me metal one doesnt give me the versatility as my leather one.

  • cool vid I learned something!

  • Good food for thought. I find many tables are concave or convex along their length. I think this can be a big factor in how all the parts interact, including ligature placement. Flat on flat is best. Less can vary and go wrong.
