Today we noticed a local search engine optimization reference disappear from Google Maps. When clicking on a listing in the local "Ten Pack" on Google or from Google Maps, you are offered the ability to Edit a listing (unless it is claimed by the business owner already). When you click Edit, you are given visibility to the Categories the business has been placed under.
Understanding which categories similar businesses are placed in can and does help businesses who are new to Google Maps best decide which categories are the most appropriate. An example would a dentist trying to decide whether Dentist Office or just Dentist is the "best" category to get the maximum visibility in Google Maps.
I guess now it's a big guessing game. Unless we all collectively complain to Google about this issue, it's doubtful they will revert back to the way categories were displayed prior to 6/22/09.
