Lawrence Welk's bandleading career stretched from the 1920's into the 1980's, and he became one of the most recognizable faces and voices of music for an entire generation. "Calcutta" was written by Heino Gaze and Hans Bradtke in 1960 and popularly recorded as an instrumental by the Welk orchestra that same year. It became the #1 song on the pop charts in January of 1961 making Lawrence Welk as the oldest individual (age 57 at the time) to ever have a #1 song (Louis Armstrong at age 62 would surpass him with "Hello, Dolly" in 1964)..

  • Not many people know this, but I owned the first radio in Springfield. Not much on the air then, just Edison reciting the alphabet over and over. A he'd say; then B. C would usually follow...

  • The Number One hit for 2 weeks in February 1961.

  • One of my favorites. I' m from ND and so was Lawrence. He grew in up the area of Strasburg, ND

  • I recall vividly my parents gathering round the old B & W on a Saturday night and watching ah one and uh two ah lead his orchestra...and then there were the Lennon Sisters (I believe Lawrence would say "and here are-um the Lemon Sisters" with.....)

Then there was the guy with the very deep voice Larry Cooper I believe ???? the LW singers and dancers..you see we had only one TV in the house back then so my brother and I watched what our parents watched...and we used to try and count the bubbles
