Thae 'shoe laces' ara part if tha actual shoe. The shoes are called ghillie brogues. All solo pipers and most pipe bands wear them. The laces were originally made for one to step in mud, in Scotland, and not have their shoe come off.
One time I was walking on the beach at sunset and someone started playing the bagpipes...it was sooo beautiful! I just stood there and listened with great joy :)
