September 2009 marks 400 years since Henry Hudson sailed into New York Harbor and up the Hudson River, almost to what is now Albany, performing detailed reconnaissance of the Hudson Valley region. This video, a Google Earth flyover integrated with historic maps, shows what the New York City area looked like 400 years ago compared to today. This video belongs to the exhibition "Mapping New York's Shoreline" exhibition, on view through June 2010 at The New York Public Library.

This would have been awesome if it were narrated. I don't know the details of what I was looking at on the historical maps, especially of the battery (southern tip of Manhattan). Some of it looked like what Gangs of New York portrayed. One of the final closeups looked like a cemetery.
