Please enjoy the first TidBITS Presents: Adieu MobileMe, with Joe Kissell and Adam Engst. This was a live presentation via Google+ Hangouts On Air, given on Saturday, June 16th, 2012. We had about 200 attendees for the live presentation, and they provided lots of great comments and questions via Google+ and Twitter (hashtag #tbpresents).

Please do leave us comments about both the content of the presentation and (if you watched it live) your technical experience, since we heard from some people during the event that the video was either nonexistent or very choppy.

Thanks for watching, and we hope you find the content useful!

cheers... -Adam C. Engst, TidBITS Publisher

BTW, I didn't watch your live presentation here in England but this YouTube video is perfect.

PS As an enthusiastic user of Keyclick I love noisy keyboards!

Adam, great information well presented. Your typing noise was distracting when Joe was speaking; perhaps a quieter keyboard on your end would be good.

Yes, I muted myself quickly after hearing about that from several of our people. I'd simply forgotten to switch to a quieter keyboard for the presentation - I'll have to do that next time!

Was the syncing problem with the live version or what you're seeing here on YouTube? It looks pretty good here when I watch parts where you can see our lips moving.

I played again with fruux.com and have warm feelings about it. Multi platform syncing of contacts and calendars independently of iCloud and Google. A very competent organisation based on a German university. Superb support in perfect English. I've stopped short of moving my contacts to them because their import cannot cope with Address Groups. There would be an easy workaround if it was not for the broken Last Import function in Address Book in 10.6.

So far so good. I took up Apple's invitation to move my me.com address to iCloud. No problem there. I then disconnected my iOS 5 iPhone and iPad from MobileMe. I then logged them into my iCloud account using my iTunes Store AppleID. No problem there. Briefly tried syncing Contacts but had duplicate groups which made me nervous so until I have Mountain Lion (bypassing Lion) on my iMac or MBP, I'll sync my iOS devices with my iMac via USB and iTunes.

Starting on iCloud is fine; moving from MobileMe to iCloud is another story. There's a migration process you have to initiate manually; it doesn't just happen. And my understanding is that it's not possible to do that MobileMe-to-iCloud migration on an iOS device. Or at least, that was the case a couple of months ago.

You say the transfer from MobileMe to iCloud should be started from my desktop. But presumably this cannot be too critical as iCloud must be able to cope with users who start on iCloud with iOS devices and subsequently buy an OS X device. I have an iMac and MBP running Snow Leopard and don't want to Lionise them just yet because of the loss of Rosetta. So I'm planning to join iCloud with my iPhone 4 and iPad3. I only wish to sync my iCal and Address Book and don't reckon on using iCloud for that

Excellent, and may actually persuade me to transfer to iCloud before the deadline.

I talk about setting up secondary accounts in my book Take Control of iCloud, which I mention in the video. Short version: you can set up secondary iCloud accounts in Lion, but you have to go to the Mail, Contacts & Calendars pane of System Preferences, not the iCloud pane.

But note that you can be signed in to the iCloud preference pane with one Apple ID and into the iTunes Store and/or the Mac App Store with a different one, and that doesn't count as secondary.
