This was popular when I was in High School. We weren't the greatest
generation, but we can claim to be the coolest. At any rate, we were the
first to dance to rock and roll.
Old people hated the new music. Preachers said it would be the ruin
of the country. Well, the country's in bad shape now, but I don't
think music is responsible.
Tnx 4 the nostalgic post.

Last night I heard this song while driving late at night through southeast AZ in a U-Haul. It was the first time I had ever heard this original version. The Cramps did a really great cover of it which I've heard many times.

According to the book "More Bloody Brisbane" by Jack Sim (2010), the inspiration for this song was an illegal brothel in Albert St Brisbane Australia, near Elizabeth Street, in the 1940s which was officially tolerated by the police where: "Men would wait for hours to get inside. Servicemen would pay local boys to stand in line for them while they went to a cafe or milk bar". It must have been top service behind Brisbane's Green Door!

Grandfather used to have this along with a bunch of cool 78 records when I was a kid! One song I can't find is "I Think I've Been Dreaming Again"?

@hackman1911, actually, "Green Door" and "Hernando's Hideaway" are BOTH using Prohibition slang. The phrase "Joe sent me" was the password for entrance into the speakeasies of the day.
"When I said Joe sent me, someone laughed out loud". I wonder if thats a reference to the song hernandos hidaway?
