In May 2007, NME magazine placed "Panic" at number 21 in its list of the 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever. (By the way, "Live Forever" by Oasis takes the top spot in the list (no surprise to me ^^), followed by "Smells like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana)

The lyrics "hang the blessed DJ / because the music that they constantly play / it says nothing to me about my life", refer to the fact that after the report of the Chernobyl disaster, a popular radio disc jockey, Steve Wright, played a song by Wham!, something which Morrissey saw as highly inappropriate.
