MaximsNewsNetwork: 14 January 2010 - UN agencies are stepping up relief efforts following Tuesday's devastating earthquake in Haiti that killed tens of thousands of people and left many trapped beneath the rubble.

At a joint news conference in Geneva, UN officials said international relief teams were on the spot and more were on their way to the Caribbean island, or waiting to be mobilized.

Helicopters, heavy-lifting equipment, food, water, shelter, medical supplies and communications equipment were urgently needed. The airport was operational and while roads were congested it was possible to transport relief supplies to most of the affected areas around the capital Port.-au-Prince.

Food distribution had begun and while this was "a drop in the bucket", more food would be provided from existing storage supplies or sent in from abroad.

Trauma injuries such as compound fractures and internal injuries resulting from buildings collapsing on people were major health concerns. Treatment to prevent deaths from lacerations and infection were among health priorities.

More than a hundred UN international staff and an unknown number of local staff were still unaccounted for. Staff in what remained of the UN compound spent the night treating injured neighbors.
