Its funny if you listen to the lyrics, its actually the man singing who doesn't know what the meaning of love is. And when he is old he looks back with regret at his life. I am so glad I avoided making stupid mistakes through the prism of a youthful eye. Married 32 years. Praise God.

@abrevaderci1 God's good, isn't He! Unfortunately I didn't avoid the stupid mistakes, but FORTUNATELY, God forgives and has given me a wonderful Godly woman. Celebrated 27 years recently (and 13 children later!)

My interpretation of the lyrics are this: Cinderella ended up returning and raising the child with the man. The man is looking back on his life with his family and feeling that while he's done right by the boy, by raising, providing for and loving the child. He feels cheated that he didn't end up with a woman he truly loved. Comments?

Thank-you for the work you did making this video. you have done a great job! I find most women don't understand this song but most men of a certain age can relate. This song has always spoke to me and many of my friends, true is forever!

It was written by a 16 year old so he may not have put much thought in the lyrics connecting together.

@Thadesgal I have good news for you. She did NOT leave. Listen to the last chorus carefully. You're not alone. I thought the very same thing. :( I do love happy endings. :) Listen again.

@ThorVonLomax I've listened to it many times & I believe that the lyrics are "Rocking chair on the front porch" & emphasizes the "...Now that I'm old" lyric. I also believe he expresses regret saying, "I shoulda' left that morning...left that day you took your love and your child away", perhaps indicating that, in retrospect, he should have gone with them, instead of wondering "Did he have all the toys & the joys that a young man should have before he gets too old?"
If he's still with her and the boy why does he say " I remember her and the boy"?

@bertmustin I know. I guess it's just how an individual interprets it. I've always thought "he" was reminiscing about the past and how he wanted it to be different. :o )

They met. She was young. She got pregnant. He wasn't ready to commit. He was having a hard time surviving. She stayed for a while, but left. Perhaps she was damaged goods by the time she did leave. Just a sad story of wanted love.

@Thadesgal: No, wrong-You must be very young. The song is about more than one way to do things. It is representative of the times. Two words: Nixon & Vietnam. How did the Cinderella fairy tale really end? Why did Cinderella run away from the prince?Perhaps he proposed something she didn't want-such as marriage, abortion, or adoption. Why was the girl who became pregnant referred to as a 'Cinderella,' a princess? She didn't do what the man wanted her to do and was still royal.

@calicomist No. I'm not very young. Not very old either (well, at least in heart!).

Dag nab it this is the short version! The beginning guitar intro is cut short. Still a great song.

@Db60Dc19 Actually, this is how it begins. I'm surprised at how little air play it received considering what a classic rock ballad it really was/is.
