A tribute to my Dad, condensed from family home movies spanning 6 decades. (Cut originally to Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler", which summed up his attitude and approach to life, it now has Angela Easterling's "Better off in Nashville" on the soundtrack, so as not to breach the YouTube copyright rules.) This is the companion piece to "Mum" at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZKtc2YYgJU

  • I like the new music, Dave! But you're original vision is still where it's at for me, where the combination of song and images gave me a feeling of receiving an intimate peek into the spirit of your father and the love and respect you bear him.

I guess I'm also angry at the Property Rights Police... don't get me started... grrr!

  • Yes, I was making sooo much money off it too!

    /sarcasm off

Oh well, as someone who's paid thousands over the years for music rights on various things, I'm glad to know they do police it. But you're right that much emotion and depth has been lost.

Ben Burtt (the famous sound designer) once observed that often temp tracks are more interesting than the final score of a movie, so it happens to the best of 'em. Just too bad it had to happen to me and Dad.

  • Dave , this is an other wonderful video,as you said "We both feel strongly about our family history" once more , thanks for sharing.

  • Pretty soon you'll know me better than I know myself!

  • Your video "One" is a favorite of mine. One only need watch to see why. The Gambler is as well. Each viewed separately is a treat, but together the big picture comes into focus.I see you have your Dad's rugged good looks (yes a bit of Kenny R. there)..lol and Mum's irrepressible smile. I perceive Dad being full of mischievous fun and Mum,free spirited fun. I see a clear love of life and family. It is no wonder that you are able to produce videos that are so rich in both content and commentary.

  • It's funny... most comments make physical comparisons of you and your Dad to Kenny Rogers, which I suppose are true. But I also hear the story of your Dad, the gambler... a man with the intelligence and fortitude to know when to take risks (hold 'em) and when not to (fold 'em). Those qualities exist in you too, Dave. On this last viewing, I noticed that you use the same shot in "One" of your young Dad and Mum heading to a car (just married?) and draw a parallel of them diving into the pool.

  • Why thank you Jim! Indeed the Pretty Lovely Lady is my mum, who passed away 3 years ago, making these film clips all the more precious. (Sorry to hear you lost both parents so early in life.) Dad's still around, and still reminding us that we're hopeless. But we like to think he means it with affection...

  • Thanks for watching closely enough to spot the common threads between "The Gambler" and "One". You're right: their tributes intersect with that small shot of the two of them courting (not married yet)... then they later both dive into the same pool.

Sure would be nice to see Dawn Akemi in some Williams family home movies of the future!

  • Gee Dawn, I'd love to think I had my father's knack for knowing when to take a risk and when to fold. He's certainly shown that skill in business... I wasn't aware of picking it up... perhaps this talent has been latent in me till now?

He certainly is an excellent cook- a skill he picked up from his mum. Of course, I learned the basics far more recently, with you in India, and will be editing our "Bachelor Kitchen" soon.

  • I also love that you included tape of your Dad cooking! His sense of humour shines in your respectful, praise-worthy tribute. I very much look forward to meeting him... actually, I look forward to meeting your whole family.

  • It's great to know this piece of personal nostalgia spoke to you, despite the fact you'd never met the people involved. Still, I guess most Aussie families are alike...
