George Malley (John Travolta), meccanico nonché "bravo ragazzo" di una cittadina della California, vede, la sera del suo 37simo compleanno, delle intense luci cangianti provenire dal cielo; subito dopo si ritrova disteso per terra, stordito e incapace di chiarirsi cosa sia successo. Da quel momento in avanti, la sua vita cambierà per sempre. A seguito di quella esperienza, infatti, George diventa un "genio" universale superlativamente brillante; in più, acquisisce delle straordinarie capacità: distingue chiaramente i singoli suoni, percepisce lievissime vibrazioni, coglie numerosi dettagli visivi, diventa telecinetico e, in una certa misura, telepatico. Inoltre, non ha più bisogno di dormire.
