On Thursday 10 July, 2008, outspoken cannabis law reform activist Abe Gray was violently arrested by the New Zealand Police during the Radio One Market Day on the Otago University Campus (Dunedin, New Zealand) while he was running a stall for NORML as part of the Market Day. Undercover plainclothes police were also present and seven police vehicles attended the scene. The police were dispatched to arrest Gray for promoting cannabis law reform at the behest of the Otago University Administration officials who do not want free political speech to be allowed on campus.

  • lol those people were annoying. I'm surprised they didn't have more police, that could of went a little more out of hand with that many people. Police were calm as though..

  • Call that violent. What a pussy. The vast majority of people in the country dont want drugs here so good on the Police for doing the job we expect of them

  • fucking pigs, they dont know shit, read up on the effects of cannabis from a non bias source, nothing is bad

  • Bunch of idiots, i thought the Police were quite calm and patient. If you don't like the laws then go see Parliament and speak to the politicians.

As for the comments drugs don't cause crime... what a load of shit... i've seen it time and time again in my profession that drugs do cause crime and they do cause harm to alot of people... you might not think that but it's true... once you live in the real world and not on some campus with your head stuck in a book you'll see.

  • lol at that dumb bitch asking for badge numbers, respect to the cops for having the patience to ignore her.

  • Just so you tree hugging, pot smoking hippys understand...there are laws against cannabis use in NZ and for obstructing the Police. The Green Party and their useless, lazy, academic loser supporters will NEVER get their way in this country.

  • Prohibition does not work and creates more crime, more poverty and more sickness. Just look at the drug wars in Mexico. PROHIBITION does NOT WORK. It did not work in the 1920's for alcohol either. Today we do not ban alcohol; yet that creates even more suffering amoungst us. And for those of you who say "well thats the law, piss off if you dont like it"... the Positive Law can never deny the Natural Law. We will take our back our Freedom and Liberty! Don't Tread On Me!

  • In a nation of FREEDOM and LIBERTY we should have the RIGHT to do with our lives and bodies whatever we wish; aslong as we do NO harm to others. To outlaw drugs makes no social sense, no economic sense and has no moral standing. This is a waste of Police time which should be spent on stopping crime where people are actually being harmed by others. So much time, money and effort is spent on policing our personal habits to satisfy the morals of the law makers of the day.

  • so if the law and all laws are of the "god head" and we all look to god for guidence and trust! so didn,t god make cannibis? did not the devine master provide it for us?

people willsay yes look at heroin & coke!..man refines these drugs!what right does a man have to tell another man he can not have what god provided for him, deny us gods creation to bring peace!

  • Bloody Metira Turei, alledgedly a respected MP, sticking up for law breakers

  • Without people like this marijuana laws will never be revised, public protest and display is the only way to force stubborn governments into action. Great work Abe Gray!
