1957 - Colin Chapman's Lotus 7 launched at London Motorshow

1959 - Graham Nearn's Caterham Car Services appointed as a Lotus 7 dealer

1960 - Lotus 7 Series 2

1967 - Lotus 7 Series 2 stars in 'The Prisoner' TV series

1968 - Lotus 7 Series 3

1970 - Lotus 7 Series 4

1972 - Production of Lotus 7 ends

1973 - Caterham purchases the rights to the 7 from Lotus. Series 4 production re-started

1974 - Caterham switches to producing a modified Series 3 model

1981 - Silver Jubilee model

1984 - Starter Kit 7 available

1985 - De Dion rear suspension offered as an option

1986 - Caterham launches one-make race series with 12 entries

1987 - Production moves to the Dartford Factory

1989 - Prisoner Special edition

1990 - HPC: 175bhp 2.0 Vauxhall engine

1991 - Rover 110bhp 1.4 K-Series engine

1992 - JPE: 250bhp 2.0 Vauxhall sets production 0-100-0 record. ry in Nelson Ledges 24-hour race in USA. Entry-level 'Classic' spec introduced.

1993 - Six-speed gearbox and '7' grille introduced

1994 - Caterham 21

1995 - Caterham launches Scholarship novice racing series (later renamed Caterham Academy)

1996 - Roadsport' and stripped-out, lightweight 'Superlight' spec introduced. Rover 120bhp 1.6 K-Series engine.

1997 - Rover 1.8 K-Series introduced. Superlight R: 190bhp 1.8 K-Series.

1998 - Silverstone Special Edition. Rover 1.8 VVC K-Series introduced.

1999 - R500: 230bhp 1.8 K-Series. R500 boasts 500bhp-per-tonne. Caterham 21 GTO victory at Belgian GT race. Caterham 21 production ends.

2000 - Larger 'SV' model launched. SV offers great comfort for larger drivers plus added touring ability.

2001 - Beaulieu special edition. Caterham Fireblade.

2002 - Class Victory in Nurburgring 24-hrs. R400: 200bhp 1.8 K-Series. R300: 160bhp 1.8 K-Series.

2003 - Tracksport and SV30 Special Editions

2004 - R500 Evolution: 250bhp 2.0 K-Series. R500 Evo breaks sets World 0-100-0mph record.

2005 = The Nearn family sell Caterham Cars. New management team led by Ansar Ali, formerly of Lotus. CSR launched to acclaim with independent rear suspension, stiffer SV-based chassis and improved aerodynamics. CSR260: 260bhp 2.3 Cosworth Duratec, EU4-compliant CSR200 for export markets.

2006 - CSR Superlight: 260bhp 2.3 Cosworth Duratec. New Ford Sigma engine range launched. New 12% stiffer Series 3 chassis introduced. Ford Sigma replaces K-Series after 15 years. 20th Anniversary of one-make racing;700 competitors in 11 countries.

2007 - 50th Anniversary of the 7. 50th Anniversary Special Edition. R400 Mk2: 210bhp 2.0 Duratec. 120bhp EU4-compliant Sigma engine for export markets. X330 concept: 330bhp Supercharged 2.3l Duratec.

  • I spent almost 5 seconds trying to figure out why he was driving on the wrong side of the road, then my brain unscrambled. Ha ha! (5 seconds behind the wheel, at those speeds.. Everything can happen!)
