  • @doodeloo you have enlightened us all, we'll now only listen to Grease and Zeppelin

  • Does anybody know if Furtwängler makes any cuts in this recording of the Ring?

  • @niallguinan There are cuts in the La Scala live recording. But as far as I know the Rai recording (this one) is complete. There is also a compete Die Walkure made for EMI in studio in 1954 with Frantz, Modl Suthaus and the young Rysanek which has no cuts and considerably better sound.

  • I stll fail to see where all these people see the greatness of Furtwängler's Wagner. it is a matter of taste all right - but the finale here is a sort of cacophony! It spoils a rather fine Wotan.

  • @Spiritakis Furtwangler was never great on technical perfection, his interpretations need to be viewed in their entirety, his sense of drama is perfect for most Wagner, his ability to create dark intense atmospheres is second to none, in a word he is epic. I appreciate that many people find his 'sloppiness' too much for their delicate stomachs, especially those who were weaned on 'perfect' studio recordings. Knappertsbusch had a similar approach.

  • @alezander666 Grease came out more than 30 years ago. It's doing pretty OK at the whole being remembered thing so far.

  • @ronnie8141 WAGNER HAS THE QUOTE ""THE MODERN COMPOSER' LABELED TO HIM,RIGHTFULLY SO,HE DID STUFF SCHOENBERG,MODERNS DO,AND MADE GREAT MUSIC WORK,"MODERN",IN THAT IT FITS NOT DECADE,STYLE,OR COUNTRY,IT'S TRUE MAGIC THAT ENGULFED THE BAVARIAN KING,ALL OF GERMANY,AND HAD THE KING "SNUFFED OUT,KILLED",AS HE BANKRUPTED BAVARIA TO SPEND ON WAGNER,THANK GOD HE DID

  • @KrasseOdaVonBayern whole entire generations now, wouldn't know led zepplin from a racehorse, they are gone,i loved them,I DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM NOW,AND I STILL LISTEN TO WAGNER,WHY,QUALITY MY MAN,AND THE ENTITY OF ZEPPELIN AND THE "HEAVY METAL,PUNK,ECT" ARE PASSING FANCY,WAGNER'S STUFF IS ETERNAL,IT'S STILL VERY HOT A CENTURY LATER,NO ONE WILL CARE OR KNOW ZEPPELIN,OR GREASE A CENTURY FROM NOW,THEY'RE ALREADY PASSE,THE PAST AND DUMB TO THE NEW GENERATIONS

  • @Harashawful OH,YEAH,I SEE 150 YEARS FROM NOW,LIKE WAGNER'S MUSIC,GREASE WILL BE KNOWN AND LOVED,just kidding,it's junk

  • @Spiritakis not MANY KNOW,PAUL HINDEMITH WHO I LOVE,WAS BANNED,HATED BY NAZI PARTY,goebbles alone railed on him to 300,000 at berlin sportspalast, and radio to millions,""who is this hindemith",ect, his masterpiece symphony from opera "mathis der mahler" was banned,YET,FURTWANGLER PLAYED IT TO ADORING BERLINERS,RISKING JAIL,CONCENTRATION CAMP,TORTURE,AND WORSE,HE DID THIS ALONE,A TRUE HERO INDEED

  • @doodeloo EVERYBODY HAS THEIR TASTES,AND LOVE OF MUSIC,I TOO LOVED ZEPPELIN,BUT GREASE,WHAT A PETTY "MUSICAL" INDEED,surely others,like "sound of music,carousel,ect",are more pure and powerfull,are you joking,EVER HEARD WAGNER PLAYED,OR HIS OPERA'S,"DER GOTTERDAMMERUNG"FINALE,OR CHECK OUT BIRGIT NILSON SINGING "TRISTAN UND ISOLDE",THE "LIEBESTOD,not any damn singer now,or decades,could even sing a line she does,THEY DON'T HAVE THE POWER,and 150yrs from now,zepplin,played,shit no

  • I think it is amazing. The recording quality is poor - but there is something in Fuertwangler's 'diction' that transmits the power of Wagner. someone who knew his stuff, whatever else one may say about Fuertwangler. There are a lot more insipid recordings around, in whole or in part. My favourite: The Clemens Kraus

  • FIERCE,FIERY,FACED NAZI CONCENTRATION CAMP EVEN WHEN HE STILL PLAYED "MATHIS DER MAHLER" OF HINDEMITH TO PACKED BERLIN CROWDS,THIS MAKES ME STAND AND WEAVE,THE SPELL HE DOES CREATE,IT "ROCKS " PEOPLE,GET IT,YOU DON'T PROBABLY LIKE JAZZ,ROCK,OR MODERN CLASSICAL,AS DYLAN SAID SO ,SO LONG AGO,DON'T CRITISIZE WHAT YOU CAN'T UNDERSTAND,YOUR OLD ROAD IS RAPIDLY AGING,PLEASE GET OUT OF THE NEW ONE IF YOU CAN'T LEND A HAND,FOR THE TIMES,THEY ARE A CHANGIN!!!!,SO BE IT

  • I think many people are unfairly criticising Fürtwangler here. To me the it is the balance of the recording that leaves a lot to be desired.

  • Grease is all about rekindling lost love and taking a stand against an uncaring world. Wagner could totally have written it.

It just would have had swordfights.
