Reporter Tim Estiloz explores the infamous, true life "Dr. Sam Sheppard Murder Case" - which was the inspiration for the TV series and film, "The Fugitive". Dr. Sheppard was accused in the 1950's of brutally killing his wife... though he maintained an intruder committed the crime after knocking him out. His young son - Sam Reese - was asleep in his bed during the murder. His father was convicted of the crime... and his case became the first true "media circus" of the TV age. The verdict was later overturned due to the intense publicity surrounding the first trial... but, the trial and public stigma ruined Dr. Sheppard's life and his family. At the time of this 1997 TV profile - Sheppard's son was desperately trying to prove his father's innocence... and it's clear the ordeal has claimed a victim in Dr. Sheppard's son as well.

This story was written and produced by Tim Estiloz. Estiloz is now an entertainment reporter for CN8 - The Comcast Network.

  • wow...i feel so sorry for that guy

  • I lived in Cleveland at the time. No one I knew thought he was the killer. Most believed the bushy-haired man story. It was believed by many that Sheppard was railroaded by Louis B. Selztser (sp?)the publisher and convicted in the press.

  • And, having just read of you who defend him, I believe that you represent the problem with American Justice and the lack thereof. You are lacking in many ways, not the least of which is intelligence. You'll believe anything. I oughta know. I used to be one of you. Then, I began to acknowledge my senses. Try it.

  • I believe in my heart of hearts, and it ain't often wrong, that this man is guilty. I can't explain, but as soon as I saw that desk, and then his doctor's bag, not to mention the overkill, this was a staged crime of passion. No doubt about it. He did it, and only God knows of his repentance. Poor Marilyn. She, as we all, deserved better. Her son has understandably maintained denial. What else to do when that's all you've got? Sad, very sad. Dr. Sheppard is to blame for all of it.

  • another innocent man's life ruined.

    father & son.

  • sam sheppard is not guilty, forensic experts found a large spot of blood on the wall not from marilyn but from the killer, caused by marilyn fighting back when sam was inspected he didnt have a blemish on his body, so how is it his blood on the wall?....its the killers, sams innocent plus they found a man in jail who confessed to killing marilyn and getting away with it, he was in jail for an unrelated crime

  • this happend in the the same city i live in

  • Look deeper into the case. The blood was type O, sam and ebberlings blood is type A. the blood found could be the victims. During the first trial, Sam said a "bushy haired man" was the guy who did it, at the second trial, the bushy haired guy was out and he blamed his neighbors wife. there was no sign of a struggle in the bedroom or the living room, or the beach sam said he struggled with the killer. come on, hes guilty as hell.

  • Sam had no cuts nor scratches to his body, therefore the blood wasn't his and belonged to Marilyn and someone else, making Sam innocent.

  • omg i got scared of it!!!

  • The sad thing is, even today, though most domestic homicides are the result of a spouse, the police usually stop at the spouse even the he/she may be innocent. The police rely on statistics and misinterpret the forensic evidence. They fail to see there may be another suspect.
