3 of 8 from this gig - sorry no live video footage - good quality audio though

"Man gets tired, Spirit dont
Man surrenders, Spirit wont
Man crawls, Spirit flies
Spirit lives when man dies

Man seems, Spirit is
Man dreams, the beautiful Spirit lives
Man is tethered, tied, bound, Spirit is free
What Spirit is man can be (repeat)

He with body (?) he waged a fight
the body warn (?) and it walks upright
and then he struggled with his heart
and innocence and peace depart

Then he wrestled with his mind
and his proud heart he left behind
Now his wars on god begin
and on the stroke of midnight
God shall win - Oh God shall win (repeat)

Fear is a black tower built by man
brick by brick and deed by deed
it is the fuel on which our faint hearts feed
Love is just a whisper a breath and nothin more
but love will win
because love is coming from an endless store
Yes love is coming from an endless store (x 2)
Thats all you need

It aint why (repeat) it just is
Right now
If you runaway (repeat) I will follow
Swing low low low sweet chariot
oh coming for to carry me home"

  • @Johnny - me too the only time I went alone to Glastonbury... set me up for a great weekend!

  • I was there! Just arrived walking over the hill and seeing the Waterboys playing below in the pyramid....it was timeless.....what a brotherlee/sisterlee atmosphere too!

  • wow wow wow

  • Brilliant live version of this song.

  • Music and sound in the '80s by Mike perfect!

  • 10 tracks from this went out as a BBC Radio 1 In Concert show a few weeks after Glastonbury, I taped it and wore the cassette out, such an amazing show.

Some of the extended sections lyrics are from the poem The Four Ages of Man by WB Yeats

There's another extended version of Spirit from a BBC session a year earlier which incorporates Dylan's When the Ship Comes In and is equally amazing.

  • i saw this at glastonbury, its shit hot, bought a waterboys album, songs not quite the same, in 1987 at glastonbury festival you could buy what was called a bootleg copy, which was a C90 CASSETTE TAPE no writing and the tape inlay card was normal blue paper with photocopy writing on it, i bought it for a quid lent it out the same year, never saw it again, tried looking on ebay and anywhere else to no avail, but have it now, excellent 24 years later

  • "Spirit lives when man dies ..." ....thank-you for this lovely post....
