Leading house designer Peter Tonks from Homebuilding & Renovating Magazine takes us through the planning process for contemporary house designs.

Talking more on contemporary design, one of the things that Ive noticed thats changed and made it easier in the past five years has been the planning issue. I think if you take a contemporary house to a planner in any area, not just conservation areas or Georgian towns, even five years ago it would have been almost impossible to get it through. I notice thats changing.
Peter Tonks
I fully agree. We did some contemporary stuff literally three, four, five years ago and it was horrendous. We got the planning through but it was three times the amount of work. Weve now got most local authorities actively promoting contemporary design.

Even in conservation areas?
Peter Tonks
Yes, even in conservation areas. If its approached successfully you can produce very exciting street scenes with traditional, traditional, contemporary, traditional, traditional. It works a treat if its approached correctly.
