LIGER at the Dentist!

Lion + Tiger = LIGER! Freckles was rescued from a failed backyard sanctuary in mississippi Dec 2008. 16 year old Freckles is one of the oldest Ligers around but she is one of the most recent arrivals to Big Cat Rescue. At the time of her rescue we could see a big hole in her jowl, and feared that it would lead to her demise, but she was in such bad shape that we just couldn't risk knocking her out to get a better look. Being a cranky old cat, she wasn't about to let us get a good look any other way either. She was given antibiotics in case it was just an injury, but now that she has become more calm in her new setting we can see that the problem stems from several broken teeth. Caged cats will often break off their teeth trying to chew their way out of their prison cells and when she was left behind to die in Mississippi she probably did just that.

The dental work was completed on Freckles without any problems and she as made a full recovery. Let's hope that the dental as taken away her pain and she will have no more problems in the future.

@BigCatRescue ..I jus realized Scott said she was going to the chiropracter next! Yall r sooo amazing ..anyway I was wondering if big cats get pain meds after dental work?? I've been wondering this ever since I seen a dentist jam a long needle in & out a hole in the center of a cheetah's tooth :( Geesh ..the nerves in my tooth started hurting after watching that :O

hee hee, no Scott was referring to the staff and volunteers who had to lift Freckles, they will be visiting the chiropractor! :)Y es Freckles received pain meds after the procedure for several weeks :)

You know, this question has been picking at me for a bit, but have you guys ever had an occasion where you where working on a big cat and they woke up? Just curious.

We have staff monitoring the cats constantly and they know what signs to look for if the cats need more ore less gas to keep them asleep and the cats give us signs if they are about to wake up so we can either close the transport cage door or get them back into the transport cage with enough time :)

Yes we are well aware of the problems that ligers suffer from, this is why we are against the breeding of ligers and any other wild cat that is not part of a species survival program. We rescued Freckles a year or so before we made this video from a backyard in Mississippi.

I wish I could turn into a liger whenever I go to the dentist :( Freckles doesnt realize how fortunate she is! We humans have to take those horrible shots wide awake *sigh*

Aww, Freckles is so cute :33 I hope she lives a long, happy, fat cat life in her new home. You guys are so awesome for dedicating your time to such beautiful animals, you rock!
