There are many great games on the NES and it was quite tough for me to narrow it down to just 10 games. These are just my personal picks, most everyone probably has a diffrent list than mine. The 1 rule I made for making this list was that I can only pick 1 game per series to go on the list so keep that in mind too. And now for the list and a brief explanation why I chose each one-

10. Dragon Warrior =
This was the first RPG I ever played and it was very addicting to play. Simplistic and yet alot of depth atleast for a nes game. Whenever I play any of the later dragon quest games I always get nostalgic for this game.
9. DuckTales =
Loved the cartoon back in its day and the game definately lived up to it. Gotta love caning baddies with scrooge and of course the moon level in particular was exceptional. Great music, nostalgia factor, and good platforming controls make this a worthy game on the list.
8. Life Force=
This is one of the harder games on the list, even with the konami code. But it's the kind of game that makes you want to keep playing it because it's so hard to beat just so you can "defeat the nintendo". This was also my first space shooter game and so it earns extra points for that.
7. Zelda 2 the Adventure of Link =
It was a tough call for me but I had to give the edge to this one over the first zelda mainly due to this game having a more involved story and this game was much harder in my opinion thus making me play this game alot more to try and beat it so it kind of has an unfair advantage there with more coverage.
6. Final Fantasy =
Who doesn't love this game. Tons of exploration, monsters to fight, secrets to find, this game had it all when it comes to old school rpgs. My favorite team was always 2 warriors and a white mage and a black mage.
5. Metroid =
I really loved the mystery and feeling of being all alone against the creatures of the planet. TONS of exploration, intresting unique powerups, intresting bosses, and a heck of a twist ending (back in the nes days) make this one of the best games in the nes library.
4. Punch Out =
Very addicting game, and very challenging. Lots of fun to play and easy to play too. Who knew a old boxing game would age as well as this game eh. I still remember when I first beat Mike Tyson as a kid, it felt like such a great accomplishment. Oh and super macho man is so evil..
3. Super Mario Bros 3 =
"gasp, this game not the #1 slot!? Blasphemy!" is what you guys are thinking right? Well it's undeniable this is easily one of the best games ever made and I got tons of playtime in this game, but I had to make this one #3 because I have so much nostalgia toward the next 2 games.
2. Megaman 3 =
This was the first megaman game I ever played and I had so much fun with this game in particular. Megaman 2 is great too but I had to give the edge to this game since it was my first in the series and you fight all the robot masters from mm2 in this game so it's like it has the best of both in 1 game. Great music, Great action, Great bosses, Great game.
1. Castlevania 3 Dracula's Curse =
Both me and my brother was obsessed with this game and we played the hell out of it. We both died so many times and got so angry it practically became our main goal in life to defeat dracula in this game and defeat the evil nintendo. Back in those days I was like 5-6 years old and didn't have much patience, but dracula's curse just kept drawing me back in for more abuse. My favorite sidekick was Alucard since you can just become a bat and bypass alot of difficult platforming.

  • Does anyone know a squirrel game? You play as a squirrel that stands on 2 feet and you grab items and throw them. In 2-player mode, two players can play as the squirrel brothers.

I am not sure if that's a NES game or not. I tried to find it by browsing through the list of games on wiki, but I couldn't find it.

  • @Minnnt I think you are thinking of chip and dale rescue rangers.

  • you can buy one on ebay for an EXTREMLY cheap price...either that or get an emulator, though to my opinion they're not as good as the actual console

  • @ShawnYMCMB Nah it's all right xD that was a legitimate question

  • @thebandz Oh yeah, sorry if my reply was a bit rude, plus I hadn't noticed your comment was posted so long ago. :)

  • @ShawnYMCMB I posted that a year ago, and looking back on it now I have no idea why I said that. Emulator's are definitely better :P but, the actual console is always nice, it's like going back to the past.

  • @thebandz How are they not as good as the actual console? While it is nice to have a classic piece of technology such as a NES console, playing on an emulator has more advantages. You can use any type of controller, hack games, more flexibility with saving, etc.

  • @Minnnt they are chipmunks, you son of a bitch

  • agree castlevania III was the best

  • nice list!

  • @Minnnt hi it's chip and dale you can find it here:

    oldgamzdotcom/?s=dale

  • @TheJazzer94 SMB3 is overrated, I never said it was bad but it is far from the best game ever. The power ups bore me, Mario is too fragile, the graphics and music are blander than vanilla ice cream, etc.

  • Good list, even when I can't agreed totally. Ninja Gaiden, Contra and the original Zelda are missing. Anyways, that's just me. Is hard to decide. The most of part of the NES games are great, unlike the new generation games(all shooters)
