Das Traumfresserchen (The Dream Muncher)

The Dream Muncher
(a picture book by Michael Ende & Annegert Fuchshuber)

The little princess Schlafittchen
(the name of the Princess: Little Sleepy)
out of Slumber Country cannot sleep
because she always has such bad dreams.

No one can help Schlafittchen
until her father the King
ventures forth on a long and adventurous trip.

In India one of the people told him
to stand on their heads
if they have bad dreams.

A cowboy in America,
tells the King that
they simply chew bad dreams up
and spit them out.

When he had abandoned almost all hope,
the King finds the dream muncher,
a being that nourishes itself with bad dreams
and has a terrible hunger. ....

The dream muncher wrote down a saying for the King.
The princess should recite this always before falling asleep
and then she'll have peace from bad dreams.

"Dream Muncher, Dream Muncher!
Come with the horn knife!
Come with the glass fork!
Open your snatching beak!
Let these dreams that frighten the children
Be eaten by you quickly
But the beautiful, the good are still mine!
Leave them be.
And so Dream Muncher, come quickly."
