  • No, not really. The Play was done correctly, and the film was not. The movie made a lot of changes. The movie was more humorous, when it was supposed to me more dark and depressing, which is what the film did.

  • The movie itself, in my opinion, was well-executed but lacked so much.

The play was supposed to have dark and morbid humor. It's there if you look for it.

  • I said it before and I'll say it again... this is the THEATRE not a movie. All the comments I read on all the clips make it sound like a populaity contest. The film was fine but no, Johnny Depp and H B Carter could never give these performances; they don't have the skill. Dubbing and take after take is a craft for film but to sustain these performances 8 times a week takes experience on a stage. STOP comparing them. Get out and see some theatre and learn... PLEASE!!!!!

Personally, I think it's one of the best movie musicals ever put to screen. Oddly enough, I'm not even a Tim Burton fan, but I really liked it. It did an excellent job of converting the play to a balanced movie length. I'm not really sure which part of it lacks humor or darkness...

For the record, I've always loved the play.

  • and TWIST! gotta love sweeney

  • @donkeysplooge honestly i agree with you.

  • This song makes me so sad...

  • You can hear Angela's voice starting to go, yet she nails everything. I LOVE HER!

  • @donkeysplooge dude, no wonder your comment was removed; you prefer Depp who only has one face in the movie. This one has emotion, which makes him all the more scarier than Johnny. Its like a representation of any other man; capable of evil, needing only a push to send him over.

  • @donkeysplooge i totaly agree with u there i thought johnny done a way better job of being sweeney he was made to be sweeney

  • Oh... That moment where he realizes he's murdered his wife, and his breakdown afterward, is my favorite scene out of any play I've ever seen... So powerful and sad...

The thing is they had to cut a lot of stuff from the movie, otherwise it would be to long or (in the case of the choir pieces) look out of place. They decided to cut the humour more in my opinion, I guess because Burton wanted to concentrate on the story. I really like the film I think the cast is near perfect. Not sure I could chose between the two.

  • Johnny Depp's Sweeney was very quiet and brooding, whilst this Sweeney is loud, in your face, and more outwardly mad than the movie. As I've said before, I love all the versions for different reasons. Each actor/actress brings something different to the part. And again, things are different in the theatre than in movies. Some things don't translate well.
