Mom shakes her head and gets this look
like she's ashamed of me.
There's no point in arguing.
That, I can plainly see.
So I march outside where Kelly is
and invite him in to play.
He looks at me real happy-like
and says, "That sounds okay."
As we approach Mom smiles
'cause her son has done what's right.

But then again it might.

We walk into the living room
and Mom shakes Kelly's hand.
Her nostrils flair, she sniffs the air
and starts to understand.
Her eyes begin to water
and her knees are looking weak.
Her face turns green with beads of sweat
and then I hear her speak.
She says, "It's nice to meet you,"
with a smile that's big and wide.
"But on a day as lovely as this
you boys should play outside."

She shuts the door behind us
and runs to wash her hands.
Then Kelly says, "Hey, follow me.
I've got some real fun plans."
He takes me to a garbage pit.
We search for useful junk,
then walk down by the riverbed
where we almost catch a skunk.
We find a rotting compost heap
and dig down deep for worms.
One thing I'll say for Kelly,
He ain't afraid of germs.

The hours pass by quickly
when you play in dirt and grime.
And all at once I realize
it's way past suppertime.
I yell, "I'll see you later!"
as I take off 'round the bend.
And as I run I realize
I've found a new best friend.
When I get home Mom shakes her head,
but she doesn't seem too mad.
She asks, "How was your day?"
I say, "The best I ever had."
