Man when I was 17 I and a few other guys jumped over two third rails in Chicago il because of an idiot with a gun now I don't know which is worse fukn fighting the gunmen or dealing with all then volts?
But I'm here to talk about it.
It was at the elevated western ave station
And the ties have gaps so you can see the street when your on them fuk that was crazy.

ah the third rail -.- a toys worst nightmare
-
were I live we only have them on the subway, but in southern Britan they are all over the place, I kind of wonder how this affects dogs, cats and other animals crossing the rails.

Speaker, you are just so darn cute!

lol. damn how sencless.
You did a very good job explaining the 3rd rail power system, But remember track workers prefer a 3rd rail system over others and the fact there is a protection board over it increases the level of safety. Most 3rd rail systems use between 600 VDC to 750VDC as an operating voltage and the return is of course is the running rail were the wheels ride on. I have been in the Electrified Rail Field for over 40 years and enjoyed your presintation.

a terrific job Joel, for us subway enthusiastic children of trains. I've always wondered however; why are there sometimes another rain within the parallel rails, usually for a short distance.
How great to live in a world where any question can be easily answered - Thanks

@friaraidan Hmm, not sure I know. It could be a maintenance train there to check the track conditions?

Do a search for 'indian electrocuted by overhead lines' its a bit graphic but gets zapped twice, i doubt he even touched the cable!

*shocking* stuff.
u're right...he wasn't that close. but overhead cables have way higher voltage.
