Thousands of athletes will arrive in Shanghai this week for the 14th World Swimming Championships, but entire teams are choosing not to eat local meat. They fear it could be contaminated.

An anabolic agent that builds muscle called Clenbuterol is widely used by Chinese farmers to bulk up cows and pigs. It's also on the World Anti-Doping Agency's list of banned substances for its potential as a performance-enhancing drug. Athletes who test positive can be banned from competing.

A recent study by the World Anti-Doping Agency found 22 out of 28 travelers returning from China tested positive for low levels of the drug.

The chemical was a problem during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where Polish canoeist Adam Seroczynski was banned for two years for testing positive. He claims it was due to contaminated meat.

Some teams are not taking any chances. Australian athletes will only eat meat imported from Australia, and no pork products at all.
