Metamorphic Allegory

Picture now a vengeful dove
flapping frightfully above
Visualize its righteous tears
as spitting feathers it appears
Hark now hear its puffed up roar
as it struts proudly round the floor

Wonder now as it transmutes
its pigeon toes in polished boots
Vainglorious in well preened suit
with beaky nose it cocks a snoot
Tumescent now with self esteem
it knows itself to be supreme

Devouring an old Vulgate
it preachifies in fearsome spate
Lashing with its new found tongue
it scourges fit to burst a lung
Pity all those in its view
as brimstone vomit it doth spew

Pity too the monstrous crow
for what it does it does not know
Forsaking love espoused to hate
a hellish future must await
Imagine all eternity
wracked by wrath and never free

nb. This poem is written in support of the principle of freedom of speech, in the face of action by a Christian fundamentalist group to ban a fellow poet's work. The poem is an attempt at Swiftian style satire, as requested by the organizer of the protest.

  • This is awesome, loved it thanks for posting, WS

  • @JohnEWordSlinger Good to revisit this poem - thanks for posting your comment!

  • powerful.

  • For some reason the light was dark on the video too... somehow fitting!

  • This is totally beautiful & in my opinion deserved to of won the competition. You're an inspiring Poet.

  • I'm really pleased you got to hear this, Elly. Without the focus of the protest, I wouldn't have written the poem. The fact that it came out as it did, is rewarding to me. 'Lets Hallucinate the Same thing' was a popular choice as winning poem, and I say cheers to that.
