If you study geisha, you will see the stemmed from prostitutes and courtesans, but separated off and became artisans. In fact they were in competition with prostitutes at first. Geisha have nothing to do with prostitutes. That's a Western misconception that prevails to this day.

@olympiada06 Geisha were originally men. Women got into the field much later. It's a profession based around music and entertainment. The women brought sexuality and attraction to it but you are correct in that they are not prostitutes.
