If you study geisha, you will see the stemmed from prostitutes and courtesans, but separated off and became artisans. In fact they were in competition with prostitutes at first. Geisha have nothing to do with prostitutes. That's a Western misconception that prevails to this day.

yeah.....its depressing i actually got into a fight telling tis nimrod geishas are NOT prostitutes and dont know what he's talking about!! lol he hush after i showed him pictures of geishas and the oiran. but thing that gets me is most ppl dont notice that the oiran RARELY ever wore the makeup unlike the geishas who wore it everytime they got called on >,>

its interesting to see just how characterized the make-up is for everyone. They make sure you understand that this is a historical period event and NOT to be happening to day ^_^ ... but of course... prostitution does still go on today... just not in such a flashy way

Geisha were originally men. Women got into the field much later. It's a profession based around music and entertainment. The women brought sexuality and attraction to it but you are correct in that they are not prostitutes.
