A few demos demonstrating good circle jump technique from experienced players. The difference between a standard FPS forward jump and a well-executed circle jump is substantial, the circle jump being able to cover an additional 60%+ distance and gain an extra 70%+ in speed.

Technique can vary subtly from player to player, such as how large the circling angle is, the direction of the approach, and pitch motion.

The keypresses for all of these CJs are the same, with +forward, +moveleft, and a quick tap of +moveup being all that is necessary. The rest is in precise yaw control—note that pitch does not affect acceleration.

  • shoulda enable cgaz hud for the noobs to follow jump trajectory..)

  • @bshthrasher I thought about it, as well as keypresses, but it seemed straightforward enough for people to pick up on. I think the most important part is for people to try and mimic quality circle jumps instead of those from some of the more viewed tutorials out there.

  • what's the maximum distance possible with single circle jump?

  • @godsmackhudejo For humans, aligned with the world axis, and with a ledge step up, it's somewhere around 405 u. As for max theoretical (bot/script) given those same restrictions, I believe it's about 424 u. Looking back at the distances shown in this video, they aren't accounting for "hanging your toes off" a ledge before jumping, so they are shorter than the actual gap distances. The circle jumps in this video are on average good for about 402 u gaps or so.

  • I don't think I've ever gone into the 500u range on my initial jump. I can pick up a little speed here and there after the first jump with just standard strafe jumps, but it gets a little frustrating after spending probably hours trying to get it right and failing. Especially since so many others seem to pick it up fairly easily.

  • I wonder... where would I get some nice vq3 cj demos? Could you send me some/all of the ones used in this year+ old video? :D

  • that`s right, this map is...... amazing

  • @ElementOfC yes, it does look really nice.

  • @KittenIgnition It's probably the best-looking map I've ever seen for Quake 3, for whatever that's worth

  • @ElementOfC oh... well it looks a hell of a lot like an invasion map.

  • @KittenIgnition The first one was DFWC04-1, (Defrag World Cup 04, Round 1) by Ganja. Was it used somewhere else too?

  • hey the first one was in an invasion map :D :D

  • @Speedcapture Made of spaghetti.

  • Made of Awesome :)

  • @ElementOfC that's my line!

  • @ElementOfC You can see it for yourself at your local theme park, on the Jurassic 3D motion master.

  • @zarzobb Care to tell the tale of when you CJ'd from Laurasia to Gondwana with extra 16u claw stepup?

  • @zarzobb yeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh huh huh huh

  • slowmotion jump sounds so awesome!
