The Thomond swim was recently cancelled because of bad weather and strong currents will now go ahead on this Friday September 18 at 6.30.
Limerick's top open water swimmers will be in action for the event.

The popular swim had been scheduled to take place on August 29 but was cancelled due to inclement weathe and very strong currents in the river Shannon as the swimmers took to the water.

Members of the public are invited to support the swim which will feature up to 50 swimmers from all over Limerick and Munster.

The 1.7km swim will start at St Michael's Boat Club slipway, head up to the Curragower Falls to Thomond Bridge and return to finish at Sarsfield Bridge.

Limerick Marine Sea and Rescue will patrol the Shannon and keep an eye on the competitors during the swim.

Competitor Andrea Newport who swims with Limerick Masters said the event was revived last year after an absence of more than 20 years.

"We're delighted that the Thomond Swim is back in Limerick and we're hoping to expand the route and further develop the event," she said.

"We would love if a lot of Limerick people would come out and support us next Friday. The water quality in the River Shannon is really excellent and with temperatures of around 14-15C, it's not that cold!" she added.

Some of the competititors in the Thomond Swim are very experienced open water swimmers having swam the English Channel and Sydney Harbour.

The best viewing points for the public are on Sarsfield Bridge and along the newly re-furbished Riverside Boardwalks on Clancy's Strand and O'Callaghan's Strand.

The swim is expected to take between 20 and 40 minutes with prizes for the first home male and female swimmer and for the fastest male and female swimmer.

All monies raised from the Thomond Swim will be donated to Limerick Marine Search and Rescue
