Here is a retired Chesapeake Bay Waterman showing his expert technique to making a net for crabbing on the bay. It is an age old craft that is dwindling as is the commercial fishing on the bay. He no longer makes these, but if you would like one made just like this one, I can hook you up with a fellow that learned from Mr Roe. Send me a message if you are interested.

  • I would think you would have to make it yourself, but I will ask the fellow who is now making these nets, the fellow in the video does not make them anymore.

  • What natural Bush or tree bark can to make cordage, can you use palm fronds or hemp to make cordage? What about willow? I use to see my grand mother use straw, lime from coral, something else and vines from trees in the lagoon to make cordage's but there was was too young to remember the 4th ingredient, Have any Idea? it was used to soften the vine.. when she mixed it with ashes from the stone oven, which she baked TI-TI& corn bread and Lechon inside? What do you use to make natural cordage.
