there are different teleports in the nether, you probably went in a different one causing you to come out a different portal somewhere else.
My advise: Have a compass with you AT ALL TIMES

I'm thinking maybe the portal generator puts the portal in a new chunk generated from the (new) seed value instead of using what's already there? That doesn't make a ton of sense, but it would explain the replacement.
