As a person who works in retail, I can feel your pain about this.
Generally, the self-checkout systems are designed for someone who buys one thing. However, one fatal flaw about them is that if they crash on a person who is ringing up, they will have to rely on another person to reboot and get things back up and running again. Thus, making that procedure a ROYAL pain in the fucking ass.

YOu should watch my walmart sucks video - you'd be horrified. it also deals with the self-checkout bullshit.
