Maybe there is a higher number of religious groups in prisons then atheists because: 1. There are more religious people in America than atheists, 2. A high proportion of prisoners convert while in prison.

...I have already said this. There is a far greater percentage of religious people in society so a far greater percentage will end up in jail which would reflect the demographics of society. Plus there is an inordinate amount of prison converts which you can't just dismiss as 'being scared'. Scared or not they do convert and this would obviously affect any census taken.
