Another thing; ensure you squeeze your glutes, and brace your stomach, as if you were about to take a punch without being winded. Personally I think that raising the head forward to look up as you perform reps puts undue strain on the neck and shoulders.Others may disagree.

Yes, before starting the movement you want to draw your shoulder blades back and down, as if you were trying to put the lower tips of your blades into your back pockets. That way you stabilise the shoulders and give yourself a solid base of support for each rep. As you lower down into each rep you should feel stable across the shoulders and upper back. Hope that helps!

What about the shoulder blades? Do they contract together on the bottom (touch each other), and expand on the top of the push up? Does it matter?
