It doesn't substitute for backups man, it substitutes for single (or in some drobos multiple) drive failures. The 2 things are completely separate and different problems. I have another tutorial regarding a synching solution for actual backups. I work in IT also, so please don't play "holier than thou" with me. Your bad experience is not indicative of a bad product. There will always be people with isolated issues, but on the whole, its a great solution for drive failures.
Interesting theory: one buys a Drobo and data is failsafe protected. Very wrong theory. RAID is not backup, it's not a backup strategy, it's just a data storage system. So, what do you recommend? Buying two Drobos? All I can tell: I had this unit running for 12+ months, it's slow, it's damned slow and it caused the worst datacrash I experienced ever in the past 27 years of being into IT. Forget about Drobo if it's about datasafety... it's a joke!
I have them in multiple places, because I'm a bit paranoid when it comes to data security. Each year, I will do a complete backup of all of it to Blu Ray discs and then archive them until the next calendar year.
I just ordered my Drobo, I was just wondering if you have all your files stored just on Drobo or on your pc.? I have a lot of music and Videos and pictures. Great Tutorial!
That's a very good question. I will research it for you. Another option is to clone the Drobo to another drive (making a clone of it) but that would defeat the purpose really.

What happens if the Drobo unit itself fails? How do you recover the data?
