The Freedom Barometer Asia is an attempt by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom to develop an index that measures from a liberal point of view "freedom as a whole" in Asia. Especially, it is a project of the Regional Office for Southeast and East Asia of the Foundation in Bangkok.
The data we use for our analysis is mainly based on other well respected indices such as the Freedom House Index; the Bertelsmann Transformation Index; the Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index; the Press Freedom Index by Reporters without Borders; the Economic Freedom in the World Report provided by the Fraser Institute; and the Index of Economic Freedom by the Heritage Foundation . A weakness of existing tools is their limitation to a specific dimension of freedom (e.g. political vs. economic). The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, being a liberal foundation, regards freedom from a different perspective. We believe that the combination of political freedom, economic freedom and the rule of law is a prerequisite for a truly liberal society. According to that the Freedom Barometer Asia draws its data from reliable sources and compiles it in a way that reflects our liberal approach to measuring freedom.
