A Eurocopter involved in oil exploration landed Wednesday at Magnolia Municipal Airport. The helicopter, owned by a Canadian corporation, uses a special instrument (at left to conduct seismographic research for oil-bearing formations. The instrument is lowered from the helicopter to the ground by a cable, where it sends impulses into the ground that are interpreted by other instruments. Helicopters are favored by many companies for use in remote areas. Several energy companies are engaged in research of the Lower Smackover Brown Dense formation, particularily with the recent announcement by Southwestern Energy that it plans to drill several horizontal wells to test for oil in the deep formation. www.magnoliareporter.com video
