Winnipeg on a -30 degree morning (December 22, 2008). This is an experiment of throwing boiling water into the air, so that my friends in Spain can see what *real* cold is like (at least visually).

  • "Wintercat2" where are you from? You are obviously not from Winnipeg ... why are you talking about the averages and then saying that it rarely hits -30 ... of course, if the average is -22, that could mean that it was only -15 during the day, and -35 during the night ...

For example, right now in winnipeg it is -29.2 and -41 if you include the windchill

  • You are correct, I exaggerated. It was not -30 that day, it was -28.8, and -37 with the wind chill. You can see the historical data on the Environment Canada website.

  • I know what the temp was. and windchill btw don't effect anything except humans and animals. The temp could be -40 with a 40.mph wind, it may feel like -70 to us, but not anything else like cars or whatever.

  • Not true. For inanimate objects, the effect of wind chill is to reduce any warmer objects to the ambient temperature more quickly.

  • You hear on the news all the time in winter, better plug in the car temp will be -20 and the windchill is going to be -40 tonight. you go out and see blankets drapped over the front of cars, duh, why, its not -40 on the engine only on humans bare skin. No matter what, its still only -20

  • It also applies to boiling water, since a high windchill means that heat is extracted from the water faster than without wind, therefore causing it to freeze more quickly.
