TPAC conducted a study in 2002 (The AIDS Crisis in Pennsylvania: the Hidden Epidemic Among African American and Latina Women ) to understand the social, cultural and economic forces impacting the HIV/AIDS risk factors among the African American and Latino communities. With the study results, TPAC has produced a culturally sensitive and appropriate TV commercial, specifically targeting African American and Latina women in 2003. After running the TV commercials targeting adult women for a whole year, we recognized there was a need to create another set of commercials targeting youth and started airing new youth commercial in 2004.
In conjunction to the TV commercial, a toll-free number to the Hotline was created to provide information on HIV/AIDS and to help/support those who are seeking care. TPAC keeps a log of all the calls and all the logs are entered in a database to analyze the impact of the campaign. The media campaign had a significant impact on the minority communities.
The result from the campaign was very encouraging. We learned that the media campaign is very effective in disseminating information and bringing people into care, especially among minority women and youth. Therefore, we are confident that increasing the number of paid commercials will further help people access services and eliminate stigma and discrimination.
