NASA has identified a new planet outside our solar system that might be able to support life.

Kepler-22b, named after the orbiting telescope that discovered it, is about two and a half times the size of earth and is 600 light-years away, orbiting a sun-like star.

The newfound planet?s average surface temperature is believed to be a comfortable 72 degrees Fahrenheit, which means it could sustain liquid water and puts it in the so-called habitable zone.

NASA has been planet hunting with its Kepler space telescope since 2009 and has now identified over 2,300 potential planets, about 50 of which seem to have the right conditions to support life.

  • In a parallel universe

  • People seems to forget that if its bigger, its has more mass. More mass more gravity... Try to carry a backpack with your wight on it for 24h and then say you like this planet.

  • 0:39 Can support life? Holy shit.

  • @serversushi Saying FUCK YUUU

  • @catandAk47 well its 2012 now what?

  • Realistically there are too many factors to consider... they said the atmosphere is comprised of Helium and Hydrogen, nothing about oxygen.... the planet is currently in orbit with a sun LIKE star.... however this new discovery of 2300 planets does raise alot of new questions and possiblities for reasearch. If only space exploration was cheap given the current economic status.

  • @catandAk47 yeah just the problem that we haven't mastered travelling at (or even close to) the speed of light yet.... AAANNNDDD the planet is around 600 light years away. but still... nice concept :)

  • Looks like something from B5

  • two times as big as earth i wanna go there it wont be crowded at all 7 billion people on a massive planet so basically 7 billion people dont use that much space epic! :p

  • there is not a day that passes by. when I don't think about life on other planets. sure strange, yet indeed very interesting.
